It has been there for years and years, you probably pass it every day and don’t notice.

It has great, hearty food at brilliant prices and it is so close to the city centre.

The Archway Cafe in Twerton is a little old no-nonsense greasy spoon cafe and it is a well known part of Bath in the heart of a great community.

No skinny flat whites or oatmilk cappuccinos here, just good old fashioned honest food and no messing.

Owner Wes Hibberd has owned the cafe for nearly 20 years and he is a real character.

A former Culverhay schoolboy he was born and bred in Twerton and proud.

He said: “We don’t go in for any pretentious stuff here, I bought a fancy coffee machine but I’ve never turned it on.

“Our customers are mostly tradespeople and people who work in nearby offices, they don’t want fancy coffees, they want a bacon butty and coffee in a mug,” he said.

And that is just what we decided to try, a good old fashioned bacon butty.

We are so glad we did, it was absolutely delicious. Several rashers of juicy, lean bacon on freshly baked white loaf with melting real butter and ketchup followed by a cup of no nonsense coffee and yes, it was in a mug.

And all for £4.50. It is hard to get a cup of coffee for under £3 in the centre of Bath.

The Archway Cafe has a long history in Bath. Starting life as an old railway shed under the famous archway in Twerton, it has grown and grown and now the business goes right back into the vaults and is actually quite a large space inside with room for 50 people seated.

It is hard to believe how big it is inside, it is a real rabbit’s warren, you have to climb under an archway to reach a further room with more tables and chairs.

And there are tables by the roadside outside, hanging baskets and all.

Can’t get your head around the traffic light travel lists or just don’t fancy a holiday abroad this year? There’s plenty of options if you want to stay local and still have a break.

We’ve rounded up some of the best options for a UK holiday in 2021.

Holiday cottages and cabins: With properties in pretty much every corner of the UK and something for every type of family, Sykes Holiday Cottages have a number of deals for school holidays and term time. New coronavirus measures are in place so you know your holiday is covid safe. Or get back to nature with a Forest Holiday, with cabins set in beautiful woodland.

Holiday parks: There’s something for everyone at the big name holiday parks. Haven has deals starting at as little as £179, while Pontins has a huge number of offers and free room upgrades on selected breaks.

Hotel deals: If you don’t fancy self catering or fancy a city break then Booking.com has rounded up some of the best hotel deals for the summer, you can book attractions and car rental too.

On the morning we visited there were lots of local tradesmen eating a hearty breakfast and cup of coffee before work, chewing the cud with neighbours and friends.

Wes said: “Lots of women come into the cafe now, much more than before, that’s a real difference, it used to be just men.”

They even have a ‘girls breakfast’ on the menu.

There is a great Bath sense of humour in this part of the city, no pretence allowed, it is very refreshing and makes Twerton, one of Bath’s only true communities, unique.

The prices at the Archway are unbelievable for Bath. Bacon, sausage and egg on toast is £4.50.

Full English including sausages, bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes, toast, bread and butter with tea or coffee is £7.

Hilariously, the girls breakfast, which is the same, is £6. It’s great to have a good old fashioned greasy spoon in Bath and it is thriving, people love it.

And you get a lot more change than in most places, as well as a laugh with your coffee, something very thin on the ground these days.

We will be back.
