Nigel De Jong believes it is only a ‘matter of time’ until Manchester City complete a deal for Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

City have been heavily linked with a move for Kane this summer with the England captain reportedly vying for a move away from his boyhood team.

However, negotiations have been notoriously arduous with Daniel Levy driving a hard bargain and demanding an extortionate fee for his prized asset.

Tottenham’s demands have cast a major doubt over a possible move to the Etihad despite the need for City to strengthen their attacking line.

Speaking on beINSports Nigel De Jong admitted City will need a striker this season if they are to be successful despite a 5-0 victory over Norwich City at the weekend.

“First of all, I think down the line Manchester City need a real no.9 when it comes down to the bigger games,” De Jong said. “Second of all, I don’t think it’s in the hands of City right now.

“City made a bid. At the end of the day they have to put more money on top of it. Harry Kane is still under contract at Tottenham Hotspur and Daniel Levy makes the end decision about Kane’s future.

“They’re going to keep trying, keep trying and keep trying. That is the situation they are in. We only know one side, we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes who knows maybe City have already put £150m on the line and Levy said no I want an extra £20m or £30m.”

The former City midfielder was pressed about whether he thinks City can get the deal over the line and De Jong made a bold prediction about the England’s captain’s future.

“I think he will be gone at the end of the transfer window. I think he will be at City. It is just a matter of time.”

With less than two weeks to go until the transfer window seals shut, time is running out for Manchester City to complete a deal for Kane.
