Harry Kane's Man City transfer saga compared to Andy Cole joining Manchester United

Harry Kane’s Man City transfer saga compared to Andy Cole joining Manchester United

The pursuit of England captain Harry Kane is reminiscent of when Andy Cole signed for Manchester United — but Man City won’t get nearly as much value of it as that deal.

That’s according to talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend, who has urged Tottenham to cash in on the England striker and “build a proper team” with the proceeds.

Speculation over the future of Kane has continued to mount following his exploits at Euro 2020, where he scored four goals in seven matches during the Three Lions’ run to the final.

Now, as attentions turn to the start of another Premier League season, that talk has been fuelled further still after the national team captain failed to report back for Spurs pre-season training.

United had previously been tipped to make a move for Kane, while neighbours City are firmly in the market a marquee striker signing.

MEN Sport understands they now are prioritising England teammate Jack Grealish after launching a £100million bid for the Aston Villa talisman.

Townsend assessed the Kane situation. He said: “I remember back in ’95, Kevin Keegan stood on the steps outside St James’ Park when Andy Cole was going to Man United. Coley was goals, pure goals – and you could understand why Sir Alex [Ferguson] wanted to take him.

“Newcastle were a team, under Kevin, that was riding the crest of a wave. They were competing.

“I remember Kevin standing there saying; ‘You’ve got to trust me on this one’ to fans outside who couldn’t believe they were selling goals, that they were going to let this man go.

“Then, all of a sudden, Coley goes and had a great spell at Manchester United. He scored tons of goals for them. Of course, that was always going to happen.”

Townsend added: “Kevin got [Alan] Shearer. He got Les [Ferdinand]. He got [David] Ginola, then [David] Batty and these other boys all started to come in.

“They moulded and shaped a proper team that came very, very close to taking a Premier League title – didn’t quite get it done. Even so, why’s there not a bit of that thought?

“Harry Kane can leave Spurs, they can get a lot of money for him. They can kick on, move on and be successful.

“There’s a feeling amongst Tottenham fans, I get the vibe, that if Harry Kane leaves they might as well fold the club over, put it in the bin and just forget about it – as if it can’t function, it can’t exist. Of course it can.”
