Manchester City remain one of the favourite clubs to land Lionel Messi after Barcelona confirmed that they are unable to sign the Argentine to a new contract – but Manchester United are a long shot for his signature.
The footballing world was thrown into shock on Thursday night after the La Liga giants released a statement saying they are ‘unable to continue’ with the 34 year old.
Messi’s future at the Catalan club had first come under some doubt last year after he gave an interview in which he stated he wished to leave the club.
Pep Guardiola’s side at the time were seen to be one of the favourites to land the superstar, with Paris Saint-Germain also in the race due to their ability to afford Messi’s wages.
A year later and both clubs are still favourites to sign Messi during the summer transfer window, according to bookmakers Betfair.
The French side are favourites at 10/11 to sign Messi, which is perhaps no surprise after he was pictured in a group photo with a number of PSG players including Neymar and Angel Di Maria recently.
Manchester City are second-favourites at 21/10 which would see Messi follow Jack Grealish into the Etihad after he completed his £100m move from Aston Villa.
The third most likely outcome is for him to stay at Barcelona at 10/3, with a move to any MLS club in fourth and Inter Milan in fifth.
A shock move to Manchester United is the sixth most likely outcome according to the betting website at odds of 18/1.
The Red Devils have already made a giant signing in Jadon Sancho this summer, with defender Raphael Varane expected to arrive shortly after United agreed a deal in principle with Real Madrid.
Betfair: Lionel Messi to sign for before 3rd September (correct at time of writing and subject to change)

- To stay at Barcelona 10/3
