Manchester City have been told by former Premier League striker Dean Ashton that Harry Kane is even better than Sergio Aguero was at the peak of his powers.
Speculation around the England captain’s future has spiralled throughout the summer and has been fuelled by recent reports that Kane he failed to report back for training with Tottenham Hotspur.
Similarly to City’s international players, the 28-year-old was due back at his club this morning (Monday). But, as question marks over his future intensify, Kane was a notable absence in the Tottenham camp after his Euro 2020 exploits this summer.
As Pep Guardiola prepares for another title defence at City, he wants a striker to fill the boots of club record goalscorer Aguero, who has gone to La Liga giants Barcelona.
Kane was identified and initially thought to be a priority target, certainly before Euro 2020 kicked-off.
However, amid the club’s £100million chase for Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish, the prospect of Kane signing for City now rests on the motion of high-profile summer departures.
City, though, would get far more from the England captain than they ever did from Aguero, according to Ashton.
He told talkSPORT: “I think Kane is as good if not better than Aguero, because I think he brings a little bit more than Aguero did. Course they are [different players]. Kane’s record speaks for itself.
“He will already go down as one of the best Premier League strikers for all-time, there’s no doubt about that and Aguero wasn’t fit. Kane’s had his issues, of course – but he plays a lot more than Aguero has done in the last couple of seasons.”
