Phil Foden will miss the first month of the new season for Manchester City, he has confirmed.
The talented forward picked up an injury just before England’s Euro 2020 final, ruling him out of the Wembley showpiece against Italy.
As the rest of the England squad jetted off on holiday, Foden stayed at home to recuperate and recover from his foot injury.
City’s other England internationals returned to pre-season training this week, but Foden has been absent and Pep Guardiola confirmed he was still recovering from injury when previewing the Community Shield last week.
Now, as the Premier League opener at Tottenham approaches, Foden has broken his silence on the injury and explained exactly what stage of his recovery he is at.
He told Sky Sports: “I had a little girl recently and I’ve had an injury too, so unfortunately I didn’t get away but I’ve stayed here and tried to get back fit and hopefully I can be back on the pitch soon.”
Discussing his foot injury, Foden said: “It’s still a little bit sore, it’s such a shame to do it just before the Euro final, it was really unfortunate but I’m working hard in the gym.
“Hopefully I can get back as soon as possible.”
And when pressed for a timeframe of his possible return, Foden confirmed he is set to miss at least the next three weeks before he could return to training.
“I’d say around three to four weeks more,” he answered. “Hopefully it flies by and I can just get back out on the pitch.”
That timeframe rules Foden out of City’s first three Premier League games against Tottenham, Norwich and Arsenal, and he’s likely to miss the first England fixtures following the Euros in early September. He might also be absent for the Premier League trip to Leicester when league action resumes.
City did get a boost this week, however, as Kevin De Bruyne was spotted in training after missing the Community Shield with his own injury.
