Manchester City defender Nathan Ake has drawn criticism from Roy Keane after his performance in the club’s Community Shield defeat.
Ake was at fault for the decisive goal in the game giving away the penalty with a clumsy tackle on Kelechi Iheanacho during the dying embers of the game.
The former City striker converted the spot-kick into the back of the net to dash Pep Guardiola’s trophy hosts
Speaking to ITV after the game, Roy Keane blasted the Dutch defender.
He said: “Ake is another one of those defenders that gets caught – he switches off for that split second.
“These are important opportunities for these players and it confirms to Pep that ‘this guy [Ake] is a bit short for us’.”
Ake was brought in last summer for a £40m fee but has struggled for consistency since arriving at the Etihad despite previously catching the eye for Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The centre-back had to fight through injury niggles during last season and could not break into the starting eleven last season when fit and available.
The Dutchman’s below par performance will not have done him any favours with Guardiola heading into the new season.
With Ruben Dias, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte ahead of him in the pecking order, Ake will face a hard battle to get himself into the reckoning once more.
Guardiola will be disappointed by the mistake which led to City missing out on a second potential trophy in the space of a few months after their defeat in the Champions League final.
