When coming to the countryside people often want to feel like they are being taken back to a simpler time.
The country’s virtues of simplicity and beauty are something that is regularly held as one of the best things about Somerset.
And if you are looking for a pub that holds those values dear, look no further than the Crown Inn.

Nestled in the northern reaches of the Mendip Hills in Churchill, near Winscombe, the Crown Inn is the perfect countryside stop for those setting out to explore some of Somerset’s finest scenery.
The Crown Inn was one of the Somerset pubs named among the county’s best in the Good Pub Guide 2021, as it has been in the previous two years of the hospitality almanac.
The 2021 Guide says it is “untouched by time” and boasts access to some of the finest views and walks in the Mendips.
The entry says: “Newcomers and regular visitors all love this place because it seems completely untouched by time.
“The small and rather local-feeling room on the right, with a stone floor and cross beams, has a big log fire in a large stone fireplace and steps that lead up to another seating area.
“As well as garden tables at the front, there are more seats on the back lawn with hill views; the Mendip Morris men visit in summer and some of the best walking on the Mendips is nearby.
“There isn’t a pub sign outside, but no-one seems to have a problem finding the place.”
The pub was also awarded badges by the Guide for its beer, signifying it as a place “where the quality of beer is quite exceptional or that keep a particularly interesting range of beers in good condition”, as well as a value badge indicating “pubs that offer really good value food”.
Its value for explorers is extended further by its friendliness to dogs, where they are allowed but it is asked of owners that they be kept on a lead at all times.
It’s not just the experts that sing the praises of the Crown Inn, either.
Customers in TripAdvisor have given the pub a combined four and a half rating on the review site, from almost 150 testimonials.
Among the over 100 perfect five-circle reviews, customers have praised the rustic aesthetic of the pub as well as its value for money.
We don’t want to see more cherished venues join the growing list of pubs closing following the pandemic, so here at Somerset Live we’re doing all we can to lend a helping hand by launching the Support Your Local campaign.
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic we’ve spoken to plenty of landlords to discover what challenges they face and how people can support them.
And as part of this new campaign, we’ll be championing even more pubs, from large, well-known establishments to the tiny bars with bags of character.
We’re keen to hear from as many landlords as possible, whether it’s because you want to shout about your recent refurbishment or simply because you want to get something off your chest, so please do get in touch by emailing [email protected]

A reviewer in July 2020, Paul S, went as far as to say that the Crown was “as good as ever” after the Covid pandemic, describing it as a “perfect traditional country pub”.
They wrote: “Perfect traditional centuries old country pub with flagstone floors, open fires, candle lit tables and quality cask beers, ciders plus delicious pub lunches. The world has changed with COVID-19 but The Crown is as good as ever.”
Another reviewer, Stoddie1, also said the pub was “excellent”, as well as the staff being “really friendly”.
They wrote: “Excellent traditional pub. Great beer selection and food looks amazing, definitely going to head back to try. The two girls behind the bar were great, really friendly. Great traditional pub.”
