A former CIA case officer has warned Russia’s actions will get ‘a lot worse’ due to the county’s ‘unhinged’ leader.
Robert Baer has detailed his concerns about Vladimir Putin in his new book, The Fourth Man.
It centres on a KGB agent who climbed the ranks of the US intelligence agency in the nineties.
Mr Baer has claimed Russia’s ‘war on fascism’ has in part been spurred by Washington’s ‘underestimation’ of Putin’s capabilities.
The former agent, 69, told Express.co.uk: ’What we have today is worse than anything during the Cold War.
‘There’s no question the West had to support Ukraine but at the same time we’re inching toward a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.
‘Everyone knew about Putin’s supposedly finding God and his embrace of what can be described as Russian fascism, but on other hand no one forecast his delusions would be translated into an open-ended land war and genocide.
‘If Putin is truly as unhinged as he appears, things are likely to get a lot worse.’

Just this week, Russian TV propagandist Vladimir Solovyov warned a ‘nuclear war is coming’ which will see only ‘mutants’ survive.
He added: ‘Because if NATO decides they can place whatever they want on our borders, they’ll be sending more and more of American weapons to Ukraine, Ukraine will fire and end up hitting one of our nuclear power plants, and here we go.’
When asked about the possibility of the outbreak of nuclear war, Mr Baer grimly admitted it is ‘anyone’s guess.’
His comments comes amid worldwide claims Putin is fighting blood, thyroid or abdominal cancer.

Rumours have long since surrounded the state of the Kremlin leader’s health and its impact on the war in Ukraine.
But Mr Baer, when questioned by Express.co.uk, declined to give his own verdict.
He added: ‘I won’t comment other than to say while I was in the CIA I listened to our doctors predicting various tyrants’ demises but in the end when they finally did die the timing came as a surprise.’

The Kremlin repeatedly has said that his health is robust, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently denied Putin was ill.
Most recently, British intelligence bosses claimed Putin was using body doubles to hide his ill health.
MI6 officials apparently claimed that the Russian President may not have even attended recent events, including the Moscow Victory Day Parade, in person.
Many of his TV interviews and addresses could have also been pre-recorded, one intelligence source told the Daily Star.
